The handpan, an instrument that has brought connection, healing, and community to people around the world, is now facing a serious legal threat that could make its creation, sale, and even performance illegal. In Switzerland, some creators are pursuing court action that seeks copyright control over the essential functional elements of the handpan, a move that could shut down makers, destroy instruments, and dismantle an entire global musical culture! For the past five years, the nonprofit Handpan Community United (HCU) has been defending the right to freely create, share, and play this magical instrument.
